The Worldwide Diabetes Pandemic
The Worldwide Diabetes Pandemic
Dr Richard Paisey
In the UK there are now more persons living with type 2 diabetes under the age of 40 than those with type 1 diabetes.
In little more than one generation the prevalence of diabetes in China has increased from 1 to 10 % of the population.
Diabetes prevalence in Pakistan is now 30% of adults despite low income and BMI <30.
50 years ago, diabetes was a rare cause of renal failure and treatment with dialysis or transplant was often not offered.
Now diabetes accounts for more than half of patients on dialysis.
How have we arrived at this situation and how can we reverse it?
Dr Richard Paisey has been a Consultant Physician since 1986.
His diabetes research has included studies in nutrition, neuropathy, metabolism and insulin resistance.
He has led the Torbay UKPDS centre and the National Rare Disease Clinic for Alström Syndrome, leading to 15 major publications.
In this talk, Richard will explore how Corporate control of food production, environmental degradation, and the global pandemic of obesity and diabetes are inextricably entwined.
* Please note that payment will be required at least one week in advance of the event. Cancellations received within 48 hours of the event cannot be refunded.
